When Honesto runs into Bolo in Manila twelve years after the war, his memory is triggered by the site of a centipede tattoo on Bolo's arm. He eventually recalls Mistress Isabel, the adopted Filipino daughter of a wealthy family of Spanish descent in the northern provinces, and how the centipede came to life one night, resulting in the murder of the Japanese Officer who was courting the mistress.
